My First Comic Review Life and Times of Savior 28

Written by J.M. DeMatteis (2004 Eisner award winner for Formerly Known as the Justice League).
Art by Mike Cavallaro (Loviathan, Parade).

Life and Times of Savior 28 is a five issue mini series written by J.M. DeMatteis and art by Mike Cavallaro. The story is the memoirs of an American Superhero by the name of Savior 28. It is being written after his assassination by his former sidekick who refers to himself as the Daring Disciple. The story opens by explaining the man behind the mask James “Jimmy” Smith a 39 year old WWI veteran who inherits superpowers from a power stone from outer space (issue one reveals a funny story according to Jimmy Smith on how he got the stone implanted in his chest).
The book not only unveils Savior 28’s career as a superhero, but the emotional turmoil he faces as the hero which includes his encounter with “Death Coming in Three.” There’s an interesting sequence in the first issue where after the first two traumatic deaths occur he decides to check into a hotel and drink himself to oblivion. He awakens days after his binging on September 12, 2001 and see’s the horror that he possibly could have stopped. It’s unimaginative for someone to bear the magnitude of the death toll that occurred in these attacks, but to have the power to stop it and be unable to due to a black out is a great concept by J.M. DeMatteis that starts the launching point to the rest of the story.
The “Death Coming in Three” moment in Jimmy’s life completely changes his outlook on the world around him. He begins to realize that throughout his life as a superhero he has battled super villains, but nothing ever seems to change. Throughout the rest of the memoirs we look into his attempts for world peace by meeting with world leaders and befriending villains he has battled with in the past. Fellow superheros feel betrayed by Savior 28 and the public feels that Savior 28 is menace who wants to criticize the American Government and spread propaganda. I enjoyed this aspect of the story because underneath the costume and superpowers Jimmy Smith was just trying to save the world throughout his life. He was attempting to follow his former lover Samanth’s wishes by spreading love to make a difference he only caught the message after her death, which lead to his own mortality. In issue one we are shown the last time Jimmy visited Samantha. In the scene she is in a retirement community as an old fragile woman. It’s gutrenching to read the panels and look at the art because we are witnessing a man lose the last tie he had to the world who didn’t know him just as Savior 28.
Overall I really enjoyed this series it’s a great character study and show’s a different aspect of a superhero than we normally see. It is produced by IDW publishing I wasn’t able to get this book at my local comic shop, but I did find it on tfaw.com. I will post a link to where you can find the issues under the replies.
Thanks for reading and let me know what you think,
Matt

Unfortunately my First review Couples Retreat

Hello everybody,

I figured while this movie was fresh in my mind I would express my feelings towards it. Before I begin this review I want to tell you all that I'm an easy going guy I go with the flow and I'm a generally nice guy who hardly has problems with anything or anyone unless it's just completely stupid or annoying.
I just want to say just how disappointing this movie was. I saw the trailer for this movie I had low expectations for it due the low laughs I had from it. The lowest of low in expectations could not prepare me for how minimal the laughs were in this movie and how utterly wasted the characters in this movie were. The cast includes writers and Producers Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell(Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Veronica Mars), Jason Bateman (Juno and one of my favorite shows of all time Arrested Development), Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), and Malin Akerman (Watchmen and Heartbreak Kid). I know what your all thinking the cast of this movie sound pretty great and the supporting characters in this movie are pretty impressive. The major problem I have with this movie is the udder wastefulness by Favreau and Vaughn with the cast they are given.
Another problem with this movie are how the characters are written. The characters that we are introduced to have typical problems within a marriage. Dave and Ronnie (Vaughn and Akerman) are living two separate lives Vaughn works on selling video games such as Guitar Hero while Akerman bores Vaughn by asking him for help with which floor tiles to buy (I know what your thinking and yeah it's totally original). Joey and Lucy (Favreau and Davis) apparently cheat on each other on a constantly basis (only figures this out until they admit to each other at the end of the movie we are shown more of the infidelity in the trailer than in the actual movie). Jason and Cynthia (Bateman and Bell) are unable to concede a child and over plan for every activity within they're lives including a PowerPoint presentation warning they're friends about testicular cancer and they're 5 year plan for what will happen if they're marriage doesn't work out. Trudy and Shane (Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) are complete opposites Shane is an older divorced man who's dating a 20 year old foot locker saleswoman. I just can't believe how unoriginal the characters were and how each character fit the bill perfectly and how they should act in the situations they are put in.
The icing on the cake of this movie is the fact that most of the laughs if not all of the small scale laughs are found within the trailer. So not only can you get the basic gist of the story from the trailer you also get the laughs without paying the $7.50 to see it.
Overall I do not in any way recommend this movie I am embarrassed to say that I saw it. If this movie is any indication of what is to come in the future for Favreau and Vaughn comedies then I will not see any of them anytime soon. The days of Swingers and Made are long gone. I believe that Favreau will redeem himself with Iron Man 2 what will Vince Vaughn do to make up for not only this, but Fred Claus as well. Call me when you make Old School 2 Vince.
So this was my first review let me know what you guys think.
Thanks and I hope to hear from you,
Matt
